Course program

Firstly, the course provides an opportunity to learn how to think and act strategically, rather than simply adjusting well to the wishes of grant makers that are changing from time to time. We will talk rather little about life hacks. We will focus on basic application preparation methods and the fundamentals of far-sighted fundraising thinking instead of this.

Secondly, you will not just hear the success stories about competitive projects. You will create your own project that fits the logic and formalized process of receiving the grant.

There are main studying blocks, including following: planning, creative, budgeting, performance evaluation, successful grant writer skills.


Lesson 1
To eat fish, you need to achieve water …

Here we will talk about the grant writing place within the fundraising activities of the organization. We will make a map of the main players within the field called "Grant Aid", pay attention to ethical standards of fundraising and, most importantly, make an individual for each grant writer strategy, which will provide you with the necessary understanding to start the process of obtaining grant funding.


Lesson 2
Not all money are equally useful…

Many fundraisers pay attention to any source of financial aid at the beginning of their activity. However, not every such aid is for organizational benefit. Sometimes in terms of effort and time, “servicing” such a “toxic” donor is unjustified. Thus, we will define a major player in the field called Grant Aid, as well as practice monitoring of grant opportunities that are relevant to your organization's mission and goals.


Lesson 3
If you don’t ask, they will not give! On the third week, we will continue to talk about donors, namely proactive methods of attracting grant assistance, as well as the role of communication strategy and feedback in building long-term donor relationships.


Lesson 4-6
I see the goal and do not see barriers!

Project goal, project target groups, project geography, project logic matrix, project resource. This week we will speak about packaging the application materials and mechanics of describing the key points of any grant proposal. Concise, presentable, informative, interconnected - your application materials will acquire these qualities after this session.


Lesson 7
About sacramental…

No, it is not about the project budget. The topic will be the dangerous word "influence": we practice in justifying the social significance of the project. How is it possible to spell out quantitative and qualitative project results? How is it possible to present the short-term results and the delayed impact of the project on stakeholders? We will answer these questions during our meeting.


Lesson 8
Christmas is when children tell Santa Claus which gifts they would like to receive and adults pay for it ...

Many people think about the project budgeting to receive grant funding from this position. At the same time, donors have a different approach, namely budget is created to reduce it. How is it possible to make the planned cost items justified and the project quality maintained at the desired level? Are you interested? Then, do not miss this session.


Lesson 9
Money to money.

Grants are considered as available for those who already have a successful grant history. This is not always correct: donors provide grants to those who can handle money. How do you prove to the donor that you know how to handle money? How is it possible to represent your organization experience in the best way? What should the person do if the experience is insufficient or not relevant? These questions will be the focus of our lesson on the 9th weeks.


Lesson 10
Would you like to speak about it?

The central topic of the meeting is self-examination of the completed application. What should I do before submitting my application? We will talk about the technology of parsing the prepared package of documents within the organization team, as well as work with a practical tool "20 questions for the grant writer".


Lesson 11
The presumption of organizational effectiveness.

Grant writing is profitable only in case of systematic and conscious activity. But how is it possible to take grant applications on road do not go crazy? Lesson 12
Studying and continue your development…

At the final session, the trainer will pay attention the most common mistakes of the course listeners based on analysis of completed homework, as well as answer the questions, sent to us in advance.

Learning Mechanism

  1. The main part of the training is held in the format of “live” meetings with an expert, during which theoretical and practical material is provided, as well as questions of the participants are analyzed. If you are unable to attend the webinar, you will be able to view it at a convenient time.
  2. An important part of the learning is provided within homework, which is checked by the teacher. You will also have the opportunity to review your colleagues' homework (lesson 4-6) and provide meaningful comments on how to improve the text of the application. Students will earn points for completing the tasks.
  3. At the end of the course, participants take a test and present their final work, getting their points.
  4. Upon completion of the online course, students will receive a certificate on “Advanced grant writing course” from the School of Grant Writer. The best graduates will be invited to join the Synergy Development Consulting team.

Svitlana Olieinikova

Svitlana Olieinikova is an expert in fundraising and social, cultural and business projects development. She is an organizational trainer, author of the Business Support Program. Graduate of the Open World Leadership Centre (USA), Tech Camp (US Embassy) and CRDF (USA), Stanford University’s Center of Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (USA).

Svitlana Olieinikova is a laureate of the Kyiv City Council Prize for the significant contribution to the entrepreneurship and market infrastructure development in Kyiv and high professionalism (2018). CEO of the consulting company Synergy Development Consulting, as well as co-founder, Chairman of the Board of the International Agency for Change.

She has been working in the field of fundraising for 14 years. The diverse experience in attracting funds to social and commercial projects has been gained during this time. Nowadays, the main attention is focused on the following topics: strategic fundraising; relations with donors and attracting non-reimbursable loan (grants); attraction of non-monetary (benefits in kind) assistance and relations with sponsors; development of social entrepreneurship.
